Although DEL college sports primarily use the normal DEL ranking system, the BCS bowl bids are determined using a BCS-like formula. A team's BCS ranking is based on three factors:
  • standard computer ranking
  • writers' poll
  • coaches' poll

Each component is measured by team-by-team comparisons. For the standard ranking and writers' poll, this is based on the probability that one team is better than the other. For the coaches' poll, this is based on the fraction of coaches who placed one team ahead of the other on the ballot.

There are ten BCS bowl bids, of which six are given to the champions of the six major (Tier I) conferences.

The other four are at-large bids and are given out as follows, in order of priority:

  1. The #1 and #2 ranked BCS teams are taken, if it was an at-large team or Tier II conference champion.
  2. The highest-ranked Tier II conference champion, if ranked in the top 12.
  3. The highest-ranked independent, if ranked in the top 8.
  4. Any team in the top four of the BCS rankings.
  5. The highest-ranked available team, if no more than one team from that conference has already been taken.
  6. The highest-ranked available team, if two teams from that conference have already been taken.
  7. The highest-ranked available team, regardless of number of teams taken from that conference.

CCEL has never needed to use the last option; allowing a third team per conference has always allowed the league to fill the number of BCS slots.

Note that the BCS ranking orders are strictly used for giving preference in cases in which the BCS committee (in real-life) would have discretion to select any available BCS team.

The two highest-ranked conference champions play for the national championship in the Dolphin Bowl. The other four conference champions are placed into the bowls according to their conference tie-ins:

  1. Rose Bowl: Big 10 and Pac-10 champions
  2. Orange Bowl: ACC and Big East champion
  3. Fiesta Bowl: Big 12 champion
  4. Sugar Bowl: SEC champion

Of the at-large teams, the first selection goes to the bowl that lost the #1 team to the Dolphin Bowl and the second selection goes to the bowl with the #2 team. In each case, an at-large team from the same conference would be selected if the conference has a BCS at-large team. If this is not possible, the highest-ranked BCS at-large team that would not create a rematch is selected.

The final bowl selections are the at-large berths of the Fiesta Bowl and Sugar Bowl. These split the two remaining at-large teams. If one ordering is necessary in order to avoid a rematch, this is done. If not, the Fiesta Bowl gets the team with the higher BCS ranking.
