Although DEL college sports primarily use the normal DEL ranking system, the BCS bowl bids are determined using a BCS-like formula. A team's BCS ranking is based on three factors:
  • standard computer ranking
  • writers' poll
  • coaches' poll

Each component is measured by team-by-team comparisons. For the standard ranking and writers' poll, this is based on the probability that one team is better than the other. For the coaches' poll, this is based on the fraction of coaches who placed one team ahead of the other on the ballot.

There are ten BCS bowl bids, of which six are normally given to the champions of the six major (Tier I) conferences. In CCEL, the automatic bid is given to the five strongest conferences (as determined by the computer rankings), and to the sixth if it meets either of the following criteria:

  • The conference has any team in the BCS top 12.
  • The conference's strength rating is above the threshold (which can be viewed at the bottom of the ranking page in the HTML source).

The other four or five are at-large bids and are given out as follows, in order of priority:

  1. The highest-ranked Tier II conference champion, if ranked in the top 12.
  2. The highest-ranked independent, if ranked in the top 8.
  3. Any team in the top four of the BCS rankings. In real-life, this is only available to Tier I teams; in CCEL this is available for all teams (not that it is common to have a midmajor ranked in the top 4 that didn't also win its conference).

Note that no more than two BCS bids (including the automatic bid) can go to teams in the same conference.

Should BCS at-large spots remain open, any team can be selected, provided that it is in the top 14 of the BCS rankings. In real-life, this means that a team ranked #14 could conceivably be selected instead of a team ranked #5; in DEL we try to go down the BCS rankings order as much as possible.

If insufficient teams are eligible for the BCS, a third team can be selectd from a conference, provided that it is in hte top 14 of the BCS rankings.

The two highest-ranked conference champions play for the national championship in the Dolphin Bowl. The other three or four conference champions are placed into the bowls according to their conference tie-ins:

  1. Rose Bowl: Big 10 and Pac-10 champions
  2. Orange Bowl: ACC and Big East champion
  3. Fiesta Bowl: Big 12 champion
  4. Sugar Bowl: SEC champion

Of the at-large teams, the first selection goes to the bowl that lost the #1 team to the Dolphin Bowl and the second selection goes to the bowl with the #2 team. The remaining at-large selections are made in the order above, although the BCS has the final say on the bowl pairings.
