Im not sure if Im using the free man defense the right way. I usually look at
who my opponents best shooter is, and try to put my best defender on him. Its
hard to tell, from looking at stats, if this is effective or not.
Moreover-I stopped using man and went to zone for quite a while. It seemed
like, the guy I marked was prevented from shooting. . .but someone else would
score 2-3-4 goals instead.
In any case-does anyone have any thoughts on the proper way to use free man?

It's a great defense if you only want one guy to play. For example in this
game, this guy covered my entire offense. It didn't matter which of my 2
forwards I passed to, or if one of my 3 midfielders brough the ball up.
He was always the one who got the tackle or block- and he fatigued at the
same rate as everyone else. WOW
I figure we must be playing on a very,very small field and all other guys just
get out of his way.

Here is something in the help files, i hope this answers you:
If you are playing a free man defense, you may wish to specify the man matchups
prior to the game. This is done with the defense matchup control, which lets
you choose which defender should cover which opposing attacker. You may list
positions rather than players for one or both values. When making the matchup,
the computer will select the highest player on your roster order for your
player, and the "best" opposing player at the position listed.

So, if I specify DF against FD, the sim will select a matchup? Interesting.

exactly, so if you chose DF against FD, your first DF will match the best FD,
the second DF the second best FD, but i don't know what will happen to the
other defenders if your opponent is playing 4-4-2 for exemple.
