Alright, most of these other team controls make sense, but this substitution
screen . . .
This looks like nothing else in Del, and the description in the help file is a
bit too vauge. Maybe someone could enlighten me with some general ideas of how
to use this screen?

Your are allowed to have 3 subs a game, so you set the men you want to be
subed, and then you put the situation i.e fatigue, injuries. For the fatigue,
you have 1-2-3-4 etc. the one means the players will be subed when he's at 90%,
2 at 80% 3 at 70% and so one. I usually pick my 3 best players, and have them
subed when there at 70% fatigue.

actualy the subs screen is a bit more complicated than this. here are the steps
i use to create subs :
1- am i willing to risk keeping a yellow carded player on the field? if not,
you have to create groups that will subs players that are carded.
2- do i have enough good players? if not i might need to rest some of them in
order to let them play in the next game. so you would create a group (or more)
to rest players.
3- what are your tactics? if you have a situation that says, if i am winning
play 5-3-2 when you were playing 4-3-3 before, it would be clever to make a sub
FD -> DF instead of FD->FD.
4- do i have a general plan? rest 2 players, and keep one sub for DF->FD or
FD->DF for situations? (exemple).
creating subs depends on too many things. you'll get used to it. this completes
the technical notes that karim sent you. if you are still having problems, be
more specific on your question, and we'll be able to help you out

Argh! This is tough, I know what the question is that I want to ask; just cant
figure out how to phrase it so it will make sense to someone reading it . . .
"1- am i willing to risk keeping a yellow carded player on the field? if not,
you have to create groups that will subs players that are carded."
I would think it would be important to be able to sub for any injured,
fatigued, or yellow carded player-with with the number of substitution slots
available, I dont appear to have enough space to do that. So I need to decide
which players I want to sub for and, in effect, leave the rest out there no
matter how much they need to be subbed out?
2- do i have enough good players? if not i might need to rest some of them in
order to let them play in the next game. so you would create a group (or more)
to rest players.
Will the sim select the best substitute for that position from the list, or
just take the top guy off the list?
And, what would happen if I had four players who needed to rest? Since only
three (at most) can be subbed out, how would it decide
which of the fatigued players are taken out of the game?

well, first of all, injuries don't happen everyday in soccer, so i would guess
one sub for cards and injuries is enough. if you are playing very agressive,
you would better reserve 2 subs for that. on my side, i play the least
agressive possible to avoid having to think about cards.
you can only sub 3 times. so on every sub possibility the computers checks all
the conditions. if a condition is there, it starts subbing the number of times
that you requested from top to bottom.
here is an advise.
1- reserve one sub window for your most important players (cards and
injuries). one sub max.
2- if you are playing 4-4-2 and have 5 FDs you don't need to rest FDs you can
build a nice rotation. rest at least one player on the position that the ratio
using/having is the highest.
3- reserve one last spot for changing formation FD - DF is you are winning and
DF - FD it you are losing.

Ive been studying this, I think I have a fair grasp on how the substitutions
work. I guess I will find out when games start :-)
One question- is the maximum for a given situation (players fatigued, for
example) per game?
Ie, assume I have 4 players listed to be subbed if they are booked, and the max
set to 2. 3 have yellow cards. When a substitution opportunity comes up, the
sim will sub for the first two. The next time a sub opportunity comes up, will
the sim ignore that situation? Or will it sub for the next player on the list,
assuming I still have one substitution allowed.
Thanks for your patience with the newbie :-)

no, max is max, the sub will be ignored. and that seems logical to me, because
you might need the last sub for a last minute defensive move or offensive one.
you are surely not bothering. we are here to help. any other questions, don't
hesitate.
