Larry, there is 2 reasons why its not an assist:
1) the ball was clear, which means varshavin lost the ball, and while clearing,
the defender gave the ball to the guy who scored.
2) in order for it to be concidered an assist, it should directly lead to a
goal i.e. pass, header, goal. in this case, even if varshavine made the pass,
the other player made a move and then decided to shoot. there was no directly
implication in the goal on this pass.

Larry's concern is not really why Varshine didn't get the assist, it's more why
he didn't get it while Aysola got it. :)
