Here's the dilemma:
I have 4 LDs and 4 RDs active on my roster. Pretty simple for line
assignments:
line 1: LD1 RD1
line 2: LD2 RD2
line 3: LD3 RD3
reserve: LD4 RD4
Now, 1 of them gets injured for a lengthy period of time, so that leaves me
with 7 defensemen. If I want to explicitly sub for him (and don't want to
un-redshirt someone or change-positions from somewhere else), I have only one
option: to play an off-side defenseman in place of the injured guy, since I
cannot use the same player as a reserve at more than one position.
this is what I can do:
line 1: LD1 RD1
line 2: LD2 RD2
line 3: *RD4 RD3
reserve: LD4 *RD4 <- cannot have same player here
this is what I want to do:
line 1: LD1 RD1
line 2: LD2 RD2
line 3: *LD4 RD3
reserve: *RD4 *RD4
I understand the utility of having it set up the way it is. But as it is
currently, the reserve LD could be overused if one of the other LDs is shaken
up or in the penalty box, while the reserve RD might not play at all. I
suppose maybe it evens out, since the RD4 in my example could be overused if
one of the other RDs has to sit, and it short-shifts the third line if RD3 has
to sit (RD4 cannot play both positions). Too bad there isn't a way to figure
out some kind of player rotation for this situation.
