Hi, I am new to the Hockey SIM and am trying to learn the game. I have had a
ton of shots against my team so far in every game that I have played. I was
wondering if my team is really that bad or if there is something I can do by
tweaking the settings. I have tried a couple of things with no luck.
I am in the HEL, coaching the Boston Bruins.

Well, yours is one of the least-talented teams in the league so expect to take
some lumps. But, based on a curious trend I just noticed with my own team,
I'll ask this: what do you have your "line usage" option set at?

I have my usage set at more for the top two lines and normal for the 3rd. I
think that I am going to change that though. I think I will just burn out the
top lines throughout in order to give myself any chance to compete.

Ok Jay fess up. What is this "curious trend" you speak of? I have been trying
running all three lines at most this season and can definitely say it hasn't
helped...

I don't have enough evidence to be totally conclusive, but setting line usage
to anything other than 'normal' appears to give the opposition an advantage.
I had set all of mine to 'less' for several games, thinking that shorter shifts
would mean that the players might be somewhat less tired (that's the way it
works in the real world), but couldn't get any shots on net. Perhaps these
quicker changes cause the team to dump the puck, giving possession to the
opponent.
In the past I've tried the more/more/less pattern to try and keep an
under-performing line off the ice and/or better-performing lines on the ice,
but that too seems only to lead to the other team scoring more goals, probably
due to fatigue of the main lines.
Finally, Coach Bob's suggestion is normal usage on the main lines. Since Coach
Bob has been out-coaching me for a couple seasons now, I figure I better join
him so that maybe I can beat him...

Well, can't say as I've done nay real research but I would think that line
usage was relative to other lines in the package. So, running all 3 at more,
all 3 at normal or all 3 at less is the same thing. They will balance ice time
since their settings are all the same.
So far, I've yet to come across any magic setting or key ones that impact play
on a game-in, game-out basis. I'm beginning to suspect it's more about line
combos and overall talent level, much like real hockey. A line of 3 very good
players whose skill set match up will put up more points at 18 min/game than
lesser talented and less complimentary guys will with 25 min/game.
Case in point, from my 2-1 loss on Thursday to my 6-0 win on Friday, I adjusted
a couple of things. I upped my shot defense training significantly (from 2 to
4), dropped my shooting training to 2, upped my trap and backcheck settings on
normal line 1 and, from what I can was the biggest change, juggled a couple of
wingers and swapped two defensemen. My result, a 6-0 win despite being out
shot 30-19....
Granted it's only one example but should the positive trend continue, I'll move
firmly to the belief that lien combos/complimentary skill sets matter more than
most other settings do.

Well, it does show that setting all 3 lines to the same level (be it normal,
less or more) means the ice time averages out. the line usage option is
relative to the other lines in the package so i'd bet if you did one at more,
one at normal and one at less, you'd get about a 35 min/15 min/10 min
distribution... Obviously special teams time as well as trailing and leading
will affect the ice team of the normal lines too.
