I noticed Bob likes to assign roles to my players,
pass, handle, shoot etc...

In other sports I normally shy away from these a bit accept in rare cases.

How important are they in hockey. Do I really need to make a 9 shot guy a
designated shooter?

I've also noticed if Bob list you as shoot your also listed as screen... so I'm
assuming they go hand n hand?

I haven't experimented with setting no specialists at all but assume someone
would shoot the puck eventually, even if you have no shooters specified.

I think for shooting/passing it makes the most difference if you want someone
to do something they don't ordinarily do (e.g., have defensemen shoot instead
of pass).

Screeners don't work nearly as well as they do in the real world (i.e., someone
is screening on nearly every shot that isn't a breakaway in the NHL), but you
will see it happen in the PBP so it is worth putting someone there except maybe
on defensive lines.

Forecheckers I am still experimenting with, in terms of how many to set.
Setting to many may lead to scoring chances for the opposition, but I'm not
sure. The upside is they can gain possession in the opponent's zone, so you do
want some except maybe on the PK lines. Same for handlers: I have my ideas for
who to choose, but given my record since the last sim changes these ideas may
not be working!

According to the help page, you HAVE to assign someone on each line to each of
the specialist jobs . . .

Is this what you are referring to?

"Every line needs to have players who can fill all of the necessary roles:
passer, shooter, front defender, and back defender. The only exception might be
a four-man line which doesn't necessarily need shooters and passers. The main
difference between the sets of lines will be the weights of each type of
player. A defensive line will be more weighted towards defensive players (but
still needs shooters and especially passers); a scoring line will be weighted
towards shooters and passers (but of course still needs defenders)."

I think it means you need a variety of players to perform the different roles.
But in terms of sim code, you do not HAVE TO have a specialist setting for each
player or have each one covered on each line.
