So, I have a player on Michigan whom I promised PT to. He started the season
on the third line, but didn't play enough on the power play etc. so he was
unhappy after 10 games. But, lo, the hockey gods did smile and cause one of my
top players at the same position to become injured. Initially the injury was
for like 16 gamedays, so I decided to doubleshift the unhappy guy to get him
his PT. That's right, doubleshift: listing him on two of the three 'normal'
lines. Turns out, the injury took 'a little longer than initially projected'
to recover from, so that the top player has now missed 26 *GAMES* (32 gamedays)
with still 3 more days left on the injury. However, funny thing about that
PT-promise guy: he has now averaged 20 minutes per game for the season
(including 29 minutes per game over the past 3 games, though he rests if he
gets shaken up) AND HE STILL ISN'T HAPPY.

Let me repeat that: this player is averaging 20 minutes per game and he is
still 'borderline'. What idiot isn't 'happy' when he averages 20 minutes per
game, including doubleshifting?

This better NOT be because he isn't on the top skating line...

I have seen this with goalies -- A guy promised wanted to start almost every
game, I mean all but 3 or 4.

For goalies that makes sense, though I would rather be able to sit them when
they are tired than have to let the sim do it (they must be listed first on the
depth chart even if they get subbed for according to the rest level, which
leaves only one goalie playing and the unrested starter is the backup even if
the replacement guy gets shelled).

Hockey isn't like basketball, where there are only five players considered to
be starters and they get the majority of the minutes. Hockey has three lines
that play in every game: 60/3 = 20 minutes, yet my player isn't 'happy'.
Hopefully it is just a rounding error and he is at 19-something minutes. What
I suspect is that anyone not on the top line is not considered to be
'starting'. Good thing we can't choose to start the game with a checking line
against the opponent's top scorers, like they do in the NHL, or everyone would
be unhappy.

I have played guys on the third line to get PT promises, so its not a first
line problem. Did he miss any games at all when he wasn't injured? I have
noticed that if a player misses even 1 game when they are healthy that they
hold a grudge for most of the season. I think its based on a percentage of
games started or something. So you need 30 plus games to get the % of games
started up to 95% or something.

I never sat him out, but he played fewer minutes early in the season since he
wasn't on special teams. But I also noticed that he had his share of 'rest
issues' later on, so that he played fewer minutes even when he was
doubleshifting because he was tired (some 'shaken up', possibly a fatigue
injury due to the other D-man already being injured).

If I get really bored/annoyed I may go through the boxscores and calculate his
average minutes to see how close he really is to 20 minutes (19.5 or 19.9).
