For too long the rules around RFAs have been unfair to the team that are losing
the player. I realise that it was changed some time ago now as the rules
mirrored the NHL with 3 first round picks being given in return. And if I
remember rightly there was a lot of concern around coaches leaving and new ones
coming in that did not have first round picks for a couple fo years.
My concern is that drafts are pretty top heavy with picks 1-10 being
worthwhile, thats not to say that some players develop putside the top 10 over
the years. Therefore a team that is picking 20-30 usually takes a gamble and
goes for an established RFA as oppossed to a gamble on a draft pick. The
compensation the team gets in return is a 1st round pick 20-30, not good,
considering they have probably spent a fortune in salaries etc.
Therefore whilst the pick compensation should remain, for what it is worth ( 1
yr only), I suggest a financial compensation also, this may make the team
making the offer think twice. Not sure what figure to put on it, maybe $5m,
dont know.
This should also help get some balance across the leagues (providing they have
salary caps) unlike the NOHL where the big 4 or 5 teams dominate the free
agency and continue to dominate the leagues. Would love to see these guys in
the IOHL or SMFHL where I think the caps are making a difference already.
Any thoughts?
