Ive been trying to figure out some things with the individual roles on a line
(shooter, passer, screener, etc.). One thing I am not clear on, and the rules
arent clear. Do you HAVE to designate a player for each of these roles on each
line? For instance:
-If I do not designate a screener, does that mean nobody will try and screen?
-If I do not designate a shooter, will things work similar to the hoops sim,
where players will simply look for whoever has the best shot?
-What would happen if I didnt designate a forechecker?
Has anyone ever studied the sim enough to have an authoritative answer?

Shooting and passing I am pretty sure just effect the decision making of that
player. If he is set to shoot then the chance of him shooting when he gets the
puck is greater than it otherwise would be, and same with looking for a pass.
So, a great shooter and lousy passer may as well look for a shot vs risk losing
the puck.
This is just going by what Andy has said in the past. He was asked what
happens if you set a guy to both passing and shooting and he wasn't sure as I
recall (but in reality there isn't much reason to do that).
Screening is hard to do when you tell a guy to do it so I doubt they will try
all that much if you don't set them to screen. That would be easy to test
though. Just set no one to screen and see if shots come up during the game as
screened. I haven't noticed my non-screeners successfully screening shots so
that is why I don't think it would work. For instance I may set a low agg
winger to not screen so that he doesn't spend the game flat on his back ;)

I didn't really mean to come across as the expert on the hockey sim ;). I have
yet to win a title and my team (HEL Florida) tends to underperform given their
talent.
I expected more responses by now, but I will comment on my understanding of
forechecking. My understanding is that you are sending forwards into the other
teams zone instead of going back on defense. Not designating a forchecker is
more conservative, and my understanding is that no one will try to forecheck if
you don't designate them to. Instead they will get back on defense.

Ha ha ha... I know what you mean about 'underperforming' players! I think I'm
the best at hiring underperforming players. Hey, at least that's what I blame
it on ;)
Do you mind if I keep picking your brain? If you have players (LW,C,RW) set
on passing and shooting according to their ability qualities, will it matter?
For instance: (fictional players:)
Name Sh Ag In Ch Sk Ps PC POS
R.Coth 2 4 3 3 9 10 7 C
C.Guevas 10 5 4 3 2 8 3 LW
R.Padice 5 0 3 8 3 11 10 RW
If I want to have higher puck control to have lot's of passing to hopefully
set up a good shot, as opposed to shooting as soon as you touch the puck, would
I set the C+RW to 'pass' + 'handle', then set the LW at 'shoot' only? Or,
should I set the RW as 'pass' only since he can't skate well enough to earn the
'handle' choice? Will the 11 Ps on my RW be wasted if I don't choose 'pass', or
does he still pass a lot since he is so good at it?
And, is the 'forecheck' option related to their Ch ability? If so, would I
set my RW as the only forechecker since he has a high Ch ability?

Well, having read the disclaimers, you are welcome to ask away! :).
Much of how I approach coaching here is based of years of playing the baseball
sim, and I know that sim inside and out.
In that, a high arm strength pitcher will always try to strike guys out more
than a low arm strength guy. Setting to higher aggression pitching just boosts
the effect further from there. Think of it as increasing the y-intercept while
keeping the slope constant.
I would think that this sim is the same way. I do set handle and pass for the
guys that I want to emphasize those much more than shooting, but I don't
believe it is wasted to not designate. I don't have any hard answers, but at
times I won't designate a person to a role if he has balanced skills and I
don't want him holding the puck longer etc.
I think a guy that is very skilled at handling and passing would still tend to
hold the puck a bit longer and be more likely to make a pass just because he
will run into trouble less often. HE would feel that a certain pass is easy
and do it where another player would feel it too risky and do something else.
Handling and passing I think are the ones you don't NEED to designate, but they
help further define the roles on the lines for certain players.

Thanks, Darren. How about forechecking? Is that related to the Ch ability? Or
just an option that happens during play? Would I set my RW as a forechecker
simply based on his Ch ability and not have my LW or C be a forechecker, again
based on the ability number?

Seems to be both skating and checking. If the guy is a weak skater he won't
get there on time to make the hit. Aggression would play a role also I am
sure.

Wouldnt Puck Control figure in to forechecking as well?

Puck control probably factors into everything to some degree or another.
Again, I am by far not an expert on the hockey sim, so, I don't claim to know
exactly what effects what.
