Last HEL season, I set my orders at the beginning of the season and watched my
team get to the Finals.
This season, we sweep a human opponent in the first round of the playoffs, and
take a 3-0 lead against a BOB team. Then BOB storms back to take the series.
Things like that happen, its part of sports. What annoys me about this is:
a) Last season, I didnt coach my team-I was pretty much a spectator.
b) This season, when I did attempt to coach my team (matching up against their
best scorers, changing trap settings, etc), I could not see that the settings
made any difference.
Am I better just getting players on WW and in the draft, and then letting Bob
tell me how to set my lines? Or does coaching make any difference in the sim?

I have pondered this aplenty over the years. Don't have a definitive answer,
maybe someone else does. Certainly talent and randomness (especially in a
playoff situation) are critically important factors. I do know that adjusting
the line aggression settings can make a difference; not so sure about the other
settings. Unless desperate I don't let Coach Bob auto-set the lines, as I
typically want control over which players are used where/when (perhaps more
important in college than pro, with redshirts and PT-demands/promises to
account for). To save time it can help to let Coach Bob set the lines
initially, then adjust them yourself for personnel/etc. But generic line
settings, yeah it works for me.

I tend to set the minutes in ECHL.
If I was coaching a pro team, I might try to go for a dump and chase team just
for fun with lots of SK, but usually I set things up near the beginning of the
season and stick with what works.

This is something I have also pondered since joining the HEL. I like to let
Bob set things up and see where he puts people and what settings he uses. Then
I will tweak from there, but I have never been totally convinced that my
changes help.
There are certain players that fall out of favor with me that I swap out, but
otherwise I let Bob coach part of the year and I coached the other part and
didn't notice much of any difference. Part of it is the low scoring nature of
hockey, but at the least it is hard to see any real effect of changing the
coaching settings.
For me it is harder cause I don't know a lot about hockey IRL, so, most of what
I know I learn through the sim. Therefore, I don't have pre-conceived notions
of how much to trap or how to set up lines etc. I suspect that it is more a
situation of tweaking one setting gives you some advantage that is balanced by
an equal disadvantage, so, over the long run it may have a small effect on the
type of team you have but not much on success.

I see a BOB coached team went to a 7 game decider in HEL against
Ottawa. I would have expected maybe a 5 game series but BOB
did pretty damn good considering Atlanta did not once win
LP%, or shots in the series.
Unfortunately I think BOB does just as well as us but he
takes some of the fun out of it. I would have to see
evidence that a human coached team can consistently do
better than a BOB coached team.
My experience is the results are very similar.

Well I went to the finals last season, using the same line settings all season
long . . .
