From ECHL, the #3-talent team takes on talent=#31 (out of 58 teams)...

Name 1 2 3 OT 1 2 3 OT
UMass Lowell 0 0 3 0 3 6 4 15 0 25
Michigan 1 0 0 0 1 6 7 0 0 13

Both teams were relatively rested, having not played in the previous game.
What I want explained is that 15-0 shot differential in period-3. The PBP
reveals that 7 of UMass' shots occur after they took the lead midway through
the period, meaning that the scoring/defending lines were on the ice for most
of that stretch. There was one penalty during that stretch, against Michigan
leading to the final goal (1 shot). So, explain the differential, given
this...

UMass Lowell apparent options
Pull goalie: unknown
Aggression: 2.8
Trapping: 2.9
Backchecking: 3.0
Long Passes: 3.0
NZ Regroup: 3.0
Dump & Chase: 3.0
OZ Passing: 3.0
Defense Pinch: 2.9

Michigan apparent options
Pull goalie: unknown
Aggression: 1.0
Trapping: 3.0
Backchecking: 3.0
Long Passes: 3.0
NZ Regroup: 3.0
Dump & Chase: 3.0
OZ Passing: 3.0
Defense Pinch: 3.0

The only settings that changed for UMass are Aggression, Trapping, and
DefensePinch, all of which appear to drop from '3' to '2'. However, this could
also be due to UMass' power play/penalty kill settings (it would be nice to
know how settings change during the game wouldn't it, just like real-world
coaches can guess from what they see happening on the ice?). The settings did
not change for Michigan at all during the entire game.

So, with essentially similar line settings, the defensive lines outshoot the
scoring lines 8-0 over a 7-minute stretch. Makes me want to NOT have the
scoring line on the ice EVER, if it somehow leads to LESS shots than I was
getting during the rest of the game. This is not the first time I've noticed
this kind of pattern. Michigan was called for icing twice during that stretch
(vs once the rest of the game, and only twice early in the game for UMass),
even though the LongPass setting had not changed. Could the scoring lines be
automatically attempting more long passes, even though I told them specifically
not to?

Did I mention that the less-talented team was the team that did all of the
extra shooting, and that they were playing on the road? And that they are
coached by Bob? And that they are ranked #4 late in the season? Hmm. And
that I only used 1 point of training, so Michigan definitely wasn't too tired?

I thought the magic of the sim was to always set aggression and trapping to
high?

Not any more. I have Agg=least to see if I can cut down on my penalties.

There's been some weird happenings in the games lately. I outshoot a team 48-12
and lose 3-0.

Too bad there are no explanations for such occurances, reasonable or otherwise.
