The Waiver Wire as it stands now lead to a lot of lucky shots, and you end up
with a guy with a huge contract, or you end up with no one cos you under bid.

I think it could be interesting if we can brainstorm some ideas to find a
better way to go at it.

In real life, teams usually have an idea of what the player is being offered,
and can decide to go hire or not.

I continue my message here cos I press submit by mistake.

Kent talked about a 2 round process. This seems like a good idea, but then it
has to be done for all the players, and that might be very difficult to do.

As it stands now, I don't have a real idea, but am sure some of you do.

One thing I was thinking about is that we know what is the highest bid so far
for a player, and you can decide to go higher or not. The pb is that one guys
can wait until the last minute to increase his bid.

Any ideas?

That is a huge problem.

I already hate the click fest that occurs at 13:01 DEL time in every football
league on the day of training camp.

I also am not sure what good a 2-day process would do. No matter what I'm not
placing my bids until the end.

So what solutions do we have?

Hello
Thats not right. That happens only if your bids are weak.

I never had problems to fill my roster in first round. I never signed a guy to
a huge contract who wasnt worth it.

You have to work on your bids. I made a group for every position. I want sign
so many players as i need. And i list so many players as possible in this
group. If you use your prioritys and make different contracts it is easy to
handle.

I agree with MJ. Yes the WW can result in not getting the top few players in
your list. But your list should include backups a couple of levels deep.
Heck, IMHO there is no excuse for not getting a player to fill a hole.

Like all things in life hard work will more often than not lead to success.
The WW is no different.

Here's my suggestion.

1) The first waiver period would only contain the top N number of players
(where N is 100 for baseball and some other number for all the other sports I'm
not in). "Top" is defined as "asking for the most money." All other players
would skip the first waiver period.

2) The first waiver period would have two parts.
Part A is where everybody bids. Any player with less than three bids on him
signs after Part A.

In Part B, the players who received three bids are re-bid. However, there are
two limitations. #1) Only the top 3 teams that bid on them can bid on them in
part B. #2) The teams that qualify may only do one of three things: a) drop out
of the bidding on a player, b) bid the same amount as before (total contract),
or c) bid more. They cannot bid less.

All players who do not sign in Part A or Part B would join the rest of the
players in Waiver Signing Period 2.

**************************************************************
A couple of notes. The limitation of three teams getting to bid on a given
player in Part B means that you can't just leave your best bid for Part B since
you might not get there if you don't give it a pretty good bid in Part A.

By limiting your Waiver Period to 100 guys, it allows you to focus on the cream
of the crop and get your fall back guys during the second waiver wire period.

It's not perfect, but its an idea.

AJ, can you please expound on this statement for a newbie? Why is there a
click fest going on?

"I already hate the click fest that occurs at 13:01 DEL time in every football
league on the day of training camp."

"Clickfest are real, I have seen it." (My all-time favorite DEL quote)

The "clickfest" happens right after training camps, when the draft has ended
and all those undrafted guys suddenly become free-agents (and sometimes after
the 2nd WW round). They go through "camps" too and can break out, and coaches
in-the-know will be there 1 minute after camps to sign the best ones. It
happens really fast when a bunch of coaches are clicking furiously, and you can
get the dreaded "player not in FA list" message if you are a millisecond too
slow.

I for one am a big fan of clickfest, as it simulates the RL race to gobble up
all those undrafted FAs for low low prices.

MJ,everything you said I knew it, and I beleive am pretty successfull with the
waivers year in year out. Offering too low or too high is a gut feeling, cos
there is almost now way too know what too low or too high is, unless you have
experience in DEL and your gut feeling plays a big role.

That doesn't take away the luck factor in the waivers, where you missed a
players cos you offered more money but went to another team cos they offered
more years etc..

Hello
This is luck? I think this is life. Sometimes a player want money and sometimes
a player want more years and sometimes a player wanna play for a different
team.
bye MJ

Sender: Karim Cheaib

MJ, what are you talking about? We know how much a player want, but that
doesn't mean that every coach is going to give him how much he wants per say.
So wants again, it's a matter of luck as well depending on what other coaches
decided to bid

Date: Fri Mar 10 07:39:50 2006
Sender: Kevin Caery

Maybe the first time, Karim, but experience also plays into: after awhile you
know which players are more likely to draw big-dollar or many-year contracts,
and perhaps as importantly you get an idea of which GMs are likely to go big to
get certain players. It's more strategy than luck, as I see it, and I see no
need to change the system to something more complicated.

Date: Fri Mar 10 07:58:36 2006
Sender: Karim Cheaib

Kevin, you are right, and I mentioned that experience plays a big role, but
even after many years of experience, luck plays it's role. A newbie will come
and overbid like crazy, or some of the guys forgot to put in their orders, or
one of the owners decides to go crazy for once. Those are parameters that no
matter how many years you've been in DEL, you can't control, and that's what I
call the luck factor

Date: Fri Mar 10 11:01:22 2006
Sender: Tom DeSanctis

That's not a luck factor, because a luck factor exists also... That's a human
interraction factor. It's what makes these sims so darn fun and addicting.

Sender: Kent Ostby

That's it. I'm bidding 12 million on Franklin. Tom's not going to psych me
out with this "human interaction" dribble.

Oh boy, guess I have to bid 13 mil on Franklin now. :(

EPBL .. baseball .. outfielder

Guys, don't tell Ryan about him, or he'll offer him 28M :)

Someone going to pull a Tom Hicks and go for a quarter billion 10 year deal for
him? The question continues...

I got Franklin for 11.19 a year which I consider a great investment. I guess
you guys got cold feet about your bids?
