How come we can't do this?
I saw where the SIM is equipped to do it- is there a reason?

Not sure what you mean here AJ.
I think we can shorten contracts. You will have to pay off the "old" contract
though.

It says
"you cannot shorten contract"
I just assumed I could.
I tried to buy a 5 year to a one year. I had the money, it showed me what it
would cost. But then it gives the above message?

Oh I also thought we could given the pay-off. Maybe some coaches/GMs abused the
system after accumulating large balances.
It could be worth looking in the archives if something is left when the change
happened.

A GM use to be able to collapse contracts. I can't remember when the change
was made, or its justification, but the WBL has gone through a few seasons
since this option was removed.

Contracts can no longer be shortened during renegotiations. If you want to buy
out a player's contract, you must do it as part of a cut.

Thanks Kevin... 2 years ago, wow and never really noticed. Maybe because I
never tried it. :)

I believe that there was a loophole before that was implemented. You could
shorten a player's contract to a one-year deal after the regular season ended.
You were technically hit with the salary increase that would come from
shortening a deal, but since you did not pay salary if you were eliminated, it
didn't matter.

I think it was more than that. I think that was before "players will no longer
negotiate down" was implemented.
So, if you had someone on a 5 year contract at 4.20 million, and after 2 years
it was obvious that he'd declined to the point his demands would be less, one
would buy out the last two years to lower it to one year, and then the player
would offer to re-sign at 2.87 million or whatever, without having to go
through free agency.
If so, the second change made this one unnecessary.

hmmm. shame.
I would like to be able to buy down contracts

It was a great feature.

Ken, are you sure about that? I thought players would never re-negotiate for
less. I know I used the feature a couple times to re-sign players I traded for
to 1 year deals, then franchised them and would either get them back for less
or get 2 1st round picks. :D

Ken is right from my recollection. Players would sign a guy to a huge long
term deal and pay off the extra years bonus. Then they would re-sign the guy
to a relatively small contract. It is how some owners used to be able to
stockpile great players for the long term without having to keep the big FA
contracts on the books.
I do agree though that with the rule that players won't resign for less then it
probably isn't needed since you don't gain much more than a bit of convenience
for buying down now.

In terms of realism, I think I'd rather have the feature that aging players
will request less. I just haven't figured out how to code it into the sim in a
way that doesn't have loopholes...

It is certain that some coaches (me perhaps) would take advantage of loopholes.
How about this as an idea:
Only players 35 or older will negotiate down.
Untradeable players will not renegotiate.
Players that have negotiated down become untradeable.
Players will only negotiate down to atleast 80% of what they make now.
There should be a chemistry element - the better chemistry the better
renegotiating a tem should be able to do.
