I have this guy at CB, Bob used him at LB last year.

S.Ryan CB Jr 7 2 6 7 4 4 2 0 15

How useful is PB and RB for a corner, generally speaking? Is his 4/4 a waste at
CB? Any opinions?

It's useful if you blitz him.

I can't tell you how much it is useful in the open field. I suspect it helps,
but I don't know for sure.

Somewhat useful but not very. I'd use him at OLB and blitz him regularly unless
the other team has a hot TE or TB you want covered. He lets you use 3 LB sets
against 3WR formations and that makes up for the somewhat low Rs at OLB.

Is there a difference in effectiveness between a designed blitz and the delayed
blitz LBs do when they're not covering someone?

Sender: Ken Perry

Yes, a designed blitz is, from what Andy has said, more effective.

BTW - I'd still play that guy at CB, not OLB, even though the PB/RB are almost
totally wasted at CB.

I wouldn't use him too much as the blitzing LB, however he could be effective
if used the right way on blitzes. He does have that kind of look I like for a
LB who is used in coverage against teams that run a Pro 2 or 3 Wr set. Matched
up to defend the TB pass or the slot receiver he could be pretty good for you.

Much too low Rs for LB imo. Blitzing is only useful if they actually make the
tackle.

That guy should destroy at weak OLB . . . close to the ideal WOLB in my
defensive schemes, anyways.

Thanks for the input. It's been a real struggle figuring out who to put where
on defense at USC this season. My high RS SF/LB types have no PB/RB (which
hurts their ability to make stops), but my high PB/RB guys are all 6 RS. I've
had very little luck with training camp getting those 6 RS guys over the hump
of being good tacklers. Of course, training camp makes it all a crapshoot, so
I'll probably wind up having to move guys around after TC and take the position
change hit early on.

I think I may use Ryan at CB this year. If I move him to OLB, suddenly I have a
glaring hole at #3 CB.

I know what you mean Chris...I asked 3 people what my defense should be and got
three different answers. I still haven't answered the question for myself
really.

I put my best talent (with CB skills) at CB. If I have more studs I fill OLB
next and then SF and ILB last. Ignore his PB/RB if you don't have a
significantly better CB.

Did I mention that I hate linebackers? Of USC's potential group of starters,
Loranger improved from 8 RS to 9 RS and Bretas improved from 6 RS to 7 RS ...
but all of the others stayed right where they were in tackling. Dangit.

I think Washington's gonna have to be the guy at ILB, because of his ability at
PB/RB ... And I'll pair Loranger with Shabel, because of his speed, weight and
little bit of PB/RB anyway.

The other option is to swap SF Ulloa and Shabel, even though Ulloa's PB/RB
isn't that great. At least I'd have a solid tackler on each side.

On a related note, is the effectiveness of PB/RB affected by position?

For example, a '7' speed linebacker or TE does not run as fast as a 7 speed CB
or WR. If I blitz a safety with 6 PB, does he have less passrushing
effectiveness as a LB with 6 PB?

I think that in "speed vs. padding" the tradeoff by position is that effective
Sp goes down and effective Wt up at padding positions, while the reverse is
true at speed positions.

Basically, don't even think too much about your CB's blocking. WR's usually
block CB's (except on WR screens), and your guy will avoid a few more and make
a few more tackles on running plays.

The difference will be minor, but it's something. It'll also come in handy
defending any WR screens.

It's mostly wasted, but it's not a big deal. The thing I recommend you *avoid*
is the temptation to blitz the CB, as CB blitzes don't work as well in DEL as
in real life.

I have no plans to blitz from the CB position. I do have a different player
that is currently at safety who might be useful as a blitzing LB, which is why
I was asking about the PB/RB tradeoff.

Ah, okay.

Thanks for the input, though.
