of course it's all debatable whose better than who, but I tried
to be somewhat intelligent about it.

I your from the SEC or the state of Michigan, you probably did
pretty well

oh yeah... no upper class walk ons were included.

I wasn't sure how to tell if they were walk ons or just didn't play?

Sender: Gregor Ellis

Very interesting - thanks AJ.

The way to tell for upperclassmen is whether their name is a hyperlink to a
player history - if not then they are walkons.

We've been debating whether high prestige teams get better walkons for some
time; this list shows that walkon talent is almost proportionately distributed
across all Tier I prestige levels and I'll bet that collecting data for 3-5
seasons to get a valid sample size of BA and CA walkons would confirm it.

Sender: Tom DeSanctis

Yep, I had a decent BA walk-on OL that should have probably made the list but
he isn't a "true" freshman (having the dreaded asterisk) so I can see why you
left him off the list.

You forgot kicker walk-ons too. ;)

actually I totally ignored Kickers due to fatigue-

I will probably incorporate the upper class walk-ons though.

I do agree walk ons are truly random.

I also have a list of my top 100 recruits, which I'll send out tommorrow.

What I really am curious about is just how influential walk on are compared to
recruits. I've been saying for a while that a 17/18 prestidge team needs
walkons to get to 20.... I'd like to be more wrong than right.

--------------

it's interesting there are no JR/SR walk ons? whats that about?

Nice Job AJ!

"it's interesting there are no JR/SR walk ons? whats that about?"

I would think at this point of there careers, they would need a sch or just
quit football all together, who knows.

It seems like BOB coached teams get an unusual high number of very good
walk-ons.

"I've been saying for a while that a 17/18 prestidge team needs
walkons to get to 20...."

Phrased that way, I actually agree with you. In fact, I'd say that every team
needs some walk-on help to improve over time--you have at least 15 walk-ons on
roster every season--but I also think the impact of a few stud walk-ons can and
often is overstated.

Walk-ons are kind of an equalizer in DEL college leagues: completely random,
they can help teams who otherwise might get shut out in recruiting actually
land some quality talent--though they can add depth to high-talent teams too.

I think we will find the QB and RB positions to be overly critical and so
difficult to recruit for up n'comers, and a walk on like a gift from God.

Date: Thu Apr 17 10:24:39 2008
Sender: Kevin Caery

Good walk-on QBs are of course always valuable, but this does seem to be a
particularly bad year for recruiting QBs. At least walk-on talent has been
capped since the days when this guy might show up on a roster for free:

CCEL Illinois: T.Orzech QB So 1 1 2 9 6 1 9 2 16

It is my opinion that as useful as QB and RB walkons may be, nothing is a
bigger jackpot than a walkon OL. If you have a crappy RB, you can switch to a
pass-oriented offense. If your QB sucks, you can try a run-based offense. But
if you get a free starting left tackle (as I did at USC a couple of seasons
ago), your offense is five times better off than it was before.

Hey AJ, where does this kid rank overall, thanks.

My rankings are all subject, and there are people with way more science then
me...

but I think he's the #1 impact QB, and definately a top 5 new player... If I
were to redo the top 5 walkons he would be #2 behind Kubit.
