EAFL St. Louis ran the ball 0 times today and won 45-28

Hit all pass patterns, and a ton from 5 WR formation.

Sender: Matt Wintermute

You would think after the oh I dont know 30th straight time they threw the ball
my defense MIGHT have picked up on that.

About 1000 yards through the air today between both teams.

If somebody would have told me...

"Your going to get 3 INTs and 4 Sacks against St.Louis today"

I would have been notching that up as a win..

So much for that.

I like to sprinkle in the 5 WR formation and have long pioneered it in EAFL but
when it goes badly, boy does it go badly.

My advice to coaches defending it? Don't sit back in a zone. Grasp the nettle
and attack.

I will say this. Jeff is a good coach, he's been tough in CEL for years but not
so tough in EAFL. Its good to see him kicking up some dust in the NFC West now.

Unless you were best guess, your defense won't react.

'unless you were best guess your defense wont react'

Well that would explain it then..I wasnt..

Pass defense has been horrible for us all season. Nothing has worked. I have
tried man, zone, combinations of both. I have tried blitzing, sitting back in
coverage. I have tried just about everything.

Biggest problem is I have a great #1 CB and then three donkeys. I have had my
#1 guy one the other teams top WR I have had him off the top WR figuring he
could shut down the #2 guy and my other CBs could hold up since they would be
getting help from the SFs..

Nothing has worked.

There are other ways to make sure a defense reacts to this stuff.

hack into the code?

Because it's not that intuitive of logic process in play selection.

you can have a package set to any/pass or pass (which is a more geared to pass
defense) which under "Best Guess" it will go to as opposed to another one you
have more standard.

Other than that there is no secret trick.

Play zones and blitz like crazy!!

defense against 5 WR formation ?

you can define which defensive packages are run against 5 WR
you can define on the play level to key pass on every play.
so make one or two packages where all your plays key pass and use it against 5
WR packages.

The running threat from 5 WR packages is pretty small.

5 WR formations can't run. Not even QB sneaks, unless I'm mistaken. So why
would you not be keying pass on them?

Date: Sat Apr 12 07:26:24 2008
Sender: Jamie Davies

I think the small running threat in 5 WR formations Holger is referring to is
the QB scramble.

Every defensive package should have at least one play, and possibly several,
where the play-level keying overrides the package-level keying. If you get the
ratios of plays right and the settings are well-set, it provides a strong hedge
against unexpected inbalance.

That's interesting Kyle.

This is probably a 101 question I could find in the help files, but I'll ask
anyway. If you set a key within a specific play (run, pass, best guess,
default) I take it that it overrides the key set in the package, and in the
defensive situation (i.e. normal, red zone, hurry up, etc)

Apparently, I'm so curious, I asked the question three times.

Frickin' computer

You know it works Linear though, Andy explained here a long time ago. - and it
doesn't go backwards.

DEFENSE
1) The SIM looks at the number of WR's and selects possible packages.

2) The SIM looks at your SITUATION preference for definite KEYS
Run/Pass/BestGuess/Nothing

3) Then it looks at the package ratio and package preference
Least,Less,Normal,More,Most. A Least set for PASS, will get selected over a
MOST set for run or run/any if your Situation settings say Pass, or Best Guess
decides PASS.

4) Then it opens it up and selects the play based on similar criteria.

However, if it selected RUN on the Situation level, I don't think it's going to
select something different on the Play level.... at least not consistently
enough, if at all.

Date: Sat Apr 12 10:11:37 2008
Sender: Kyle Mayhugh

The "key" set at the play level overrides the keying at the package level, yes.

Date: Sat Apr 12 20:40:23 2008
Sender: AJ Perko

Kyle.... I don't understand what your trying to tell them?

If you take 2 packages.

set package A to run
set package B to pass

then play Run - Best Guess - Run (normal -ahead- behind)

it will use package A every time in normal.
it will choose A or B if your ahead
it will use package A every time if your behind.

are you saying if you put some "pass defense" plays in package A, they would
get selected?
When and why would you do it that way?

Date: Sat Apr 12 21:35:25 2008
Sender: Kyle Mayhugh

Create a defensive package you want to use in most situations.

Inside that package, have at least one or two plays you want to use when the
other team is doing nothing but passing. Set those plays to be used most in
passing situations and keying pass.

Even if your package is keying runs, when those plays come up you will be
keying pass. And it will happen more and more often as the game goes on and
they pass all the time.

Date: Sat Apr 12 21:37:21 2008
Sender: Kyle Mayhugh

I do this almost every game, but especially against teams that I know are prone
to using extreme offenses that I might not be able to predict.

I don't know how most coaches do it, but I never really had much success with
defenses until I started doing this. I never have a normal defensive package
that doesn't have at least one "key run" and one "key pass" play that will
begin to kick in when needed.

Date: Sun Apr 13 08:14:50 2008
Sender: AJ Perko

so your on Best Guess across the situation level?

I'm not stealing your idea, I'm a total micro manager- I have 45 defensive
packages and everyone is in play.

I was just curious about game mechanics

Date: Sun Apr 13 10:48:28 2008
Sender: Kyle Mayhugh

Depends on the team and situation. My default is to key run in normal
situations because otherwise you have a hard time getting to third and long and
off the field.

Date: Sun Apr 13 11:21:35 2008
Sender: Jeff Blevins

Yeah, Matt I thought it might be interesting to run that against you. The main
reason was because my star TB got hurt last game. Then I noticed that you were
at the bottom of the league in Pass Defense. Plus, my qb is a stud and playing
well. I figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

My goal was also to break the single game passing record for a qb and I did.

Sorry. ;o)

Damn you Jeff. I just realized you broke the single game passing record.

My old school QB Campbell held that record for ever.

Thanks alot

No worries Jeff. I would do the same thing..

If I had the talent.

Or was a better coach.
