Say Luddy - is there a Canadian you know of coaching at any NCAA Div I or II
program?

This situation with the mens national team is truly embarrasing.

Chris, I have to say, I am fully biased against Canada Basketball because of
how they handled a job interview with me a few years back.

Specifically, I applied for Marketing Manager, Events and Sponsorships, and got
an interview. First interview went well, so they gave me a second interview.
Second interview went well, so they called me in for a third. By this time,
there was only me and one other candidate.

During the final interview I made it very clear that I needed an answer, one
way or the other, fairly quickly because I had been offerred a position at
another company. I also requested feedback on the interview so I could identify
areas of weakness that I could work on in the future.

The interviewer agreed, but never called me back, despite my repeated efforts
to contact him. Soon after I learned that the position was given to a third
candidate... someone that was never interviewed that had been working with the
Raptors.

This experience really soured me on Canada Basketball. They were completely
unprofessional.

And if you can't even pull off a simple job interview, how can you expect to
pull off a birth in the Olympics?

Seems like a frustrating situation, to be sure.

Still though, i am curious to learnd if any Canadians currently coach in NCAA
Div I or II.

Also - theres no rule carved in stone that says the next head coach of the mens
national team needs to be Canadian.

The best coach in the history of the program was almost certainly the late Jack
Donohue.

Though - after having worked for the Minister of Sport I can tell you (agree or
disagree) there is a real push to have coaches of national teams be able to
speak both official languages, so that may make it difficult to find a strong
young US born coach who could take over the reigns of the program. Lets face
it though, it needs to be rebuilt, and was a real mistake to hire someone who
had never coached before.

Canada should hire the best coach available, Canadian or not, French speaking
or not.

Back in 2002 the Korean National soccer team was smart enough to hire a foreign
coach, Guus Hiddink, and it got them into the quarterfinals.

At the National level it should be about building a winning program. Save the
must-be-Canadian stuff for house league.

Jeff,

You do appreciate though that those feelings would not be well accepted in
Quebec, right?

Accepting that Canada does have two official languages, theres a very real
concern that at times Francophone athletes are at a disadvantage because the
coaches arent able, or willing to make the effort to communicate with them.

Given that unlike the US, the Canadian taxpayers fund our national teams to a
great extent, it seems to me reasonable to make sure the coaching staffs of
national teams make sure there is a process in place to accomodate athletes in
the language of their choice.

Chris, Guus Hiddink didn't speak Korean but he still managed to reach his
players. In fact, previous to that World cup, Korea had never won a single
game.

Anyhow, I can appreciate what you're saying, but I believe it's a problem
easily resolved. Simply hire assistants that are French speaking, and you've
minimized your language problem.

As for the head coach, well it's pretty clear to me that we need the best
available. I think the people of Quebec are smart enough to realize that it's
better to get a seasoned coach... like let's say Sam Mitchell, than it is to
get some guy with a questionable resume but can speak French.

If we can find a great French speaking coach, that's great... maybe if we went
with someone from Europe?

In any case, we need a GREAT coach to take the helm and steer our National team
out of the mess that it's in.

P.S. One of my closest friends is the trainer for the men's National team. he
should be back in the city pretty soon. Can't wait to hear his thoughts on the
tourney. Last season he even brought me Rowan Barett's practice uniform. To bad
it's like five sizes too big for me.

What is well accepted in Quebec?

Luddy's right on the money. Hire the best person for the job, and if he or she
doesn't speak French, address that shortcoming in the ranks of the assitant
coaches.

Brilliant idea to have the team scheduled to play the US team Friday night.

Dont worry though, we have Jermaine Bucknor returning to the team to suit up.
So am sure we will be just fine.

A big thanks to the Edmonton Chill of the International Basketball League for
loaning him out for the game.

By the way, I say behind Rautins at a Raptors game once. He was sitting with a
woman that looked like a middle aged porn star.
