I watched this movie last night.

Why did churches attack it again? I didn't see it too much
different then any other sci-fi flick like a Stargate, or a Startrek etc....

They sort of pre-attacked it because in the book series, the Magisterium is
represented much more like a church and eventually one of the characters
attempts to kill God.

They toned the movie down a lot to make it more palatable on that level.

It was really more the book that they were worried about, but since none of the
religious leaders who opposed the book actually saw the movie, they didn't
realize the book's dark allegory was pretty watered down in the movie.

And I don't know that the books are *really* as anti-churchy as some people
fear, but Philip Pullman has said that he is a strong atheist who formulated
them somewhat in response to the pro-Christian allegory of the Chronicles of
Narnia.

As for the movie, I thought it was good fun, and pretty clever in the way it
tied all sorts of old mythologies together. I'll watch the sequel when it
comes out.
