Methinks the trade winds are a-blowin'...

Kevin, what type of trade value would you give Losman? As only a very casual
observer of the NFL, I can't see there being much demand for his services -
except as QB depth and insurance - the same function he serves for the Bills.
I can understand his displeasure at losing his starting job to Edwards last
season, but given it might be kind to even call his performance mediocre, I
found it laughable in the winter when he demanded to be traded.

Oh, no no no Brian, I definitely agree that Losman is virtually worthless in a
potential trade, and that his only shot at doing anything in the NFL is to be a
good teammate and accept his current role and just hope for another chance to
play some games.
I'm thinking more about draft trades today, like moving down a few spots to get
their WR/CB and pick up some later picks, or trading for Lito Sheppard as Jamie
Davies suggested. I just have a feeling we'll see something interesting before
they take their first pick. I also think Buffalo's needs are organized in such
a way that they can address them all in the draft, with a pair of real
contributors at WR/CB in the top-40 or so, and then "value" picks in the 3rd
round and beyond at less flashy positions like TE/FB, backup OL, special-teams
LBs, clipboard QB, etc.

Kevin, Ahhhhhhhh, I misunderstood.
Often, draft day deals are more exciting than the picks. It's exciting when a
team can trade down in the draft, and it may actually serve the needs of the
organization better.
Given the Bills' WR needs, were you surprised they didn't take a chance with
David Boston? He signed with the CFL Argos. Have his skills diminished to the
degree where he could no longer be a top-notch receiver, or are his off-field
headaches too great? Without stats, I know he's been rather unimpressive the
past few seasons, but curious what may be responsible.

"are his off-field headaches too great?"
I'd say it's that one. I mean, as a Buckeye I've always liked the guy as a
player, but he's a guy with some issues. I would have been okay getting Bryant
Johnson this offseason, but I think the Bills can trade up or down to about
20-ish and get that "tall WR" everyone's talking about at his best value. Then
again, they do sometimes just take a guy they really like higher than expected
(Whitner, Cargo, Losman), so I'm really looking forward to being surprised in
some way today.

Kevin, who are some of the WRs you think the Bills might be able to get in a
range of a 20s pick?

Hopefully all the big-name 6-foot-plus guys -- Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly,
Limas Sweed, James Hardy -- any higher for those guys this year and I just
think a team is reaching for need. I like them all, but I don't think the
Bills need to take one at #11.

Do DEL football GMs trade down with the frequency of NFL GMs?

Well, I guess the surprise was that there was no surprise today: CB McKelvin in
the 1st, WR Hardy in the 2nd, just as Buffalo needed.
As for DEL vs NFL trades, I'd guess we do more big-name player trades here, and
(in leagues that allow it) more top-10 pick trading.

Kevin,
I didn't know anything about Hardy until after he was picked, and read a brief
article about the Bills' selections the following day. He seems like a
promising target!
Given the Bills' WR woes, or other teams with a similar weakness, why do you
think they're reluctant to search for talent in other leagues? A while back, I
read an interesting MF interview with Will Pettis, an arena league player. I
wondered why NFL teams don't at least give him a look.

Hardy will hopefully make the biggest instant impact for the Bills this year,
that guy was a stud at Indiana, one of the best Big10 WRs I've seen in awhile.
Late-rounder Steve Johnson was called a WR steal by several analysts as well.
As for players from other leagues, Buffalo's #2 TB is Fred Jackson, who started
in the NIFL and UIFL indoor leagues and then played a season in NFL Europa.

Kevin,
Anything about Pettis specifically? It just seems from what he's done, he'd be
worth a look.
My favourite is Peter Sellers who played with the Redskins the past couple
seasons. Off-field struggles may have caused the Browns to push him out of the
NFL in 2000-01 (undertain of exact timeline/circumstances, and too
lazy/pressed for time to look it up), but he went to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
in the CFG, and was solid.

Brian
