Here's an article about a guy who claims he can convert biomass into
hydrocarbons...therefore turning yard, farm, forest waste into oil. Here's a
link to the article:

Now,
go ahead and argue!!

"The local researcher believes his groundbreaking discovery could result in the
production of 500 to 1,000 barrels of hydrocarbon fuel per day from the initial
production facility."

"He estimated the budget for the research facility to be at $60 million
annually and the production facilities at $250 to $300 million a year. He
anticipates being in full scale production by October 1, 2009."

This does not seem particularly efficient.

Oil:
* 1000 barrels x 365 (days) @ $114/barrel = $41,610,000/year
*21 gallons gas (from each barrel) @ $3.50/gallon = $73.50 per barrel x 1000 =
$73,500 x 365 = $26,827,500/year

I'm sure building the first oil refinery was not considered to be cost
efficient either. I would imagine if this process becomes as popular as oil
refineries are then the cost efficiency would improve dramatically.

Fair enough. Intriguing.

Even at the best case of his projections (1000 barrels a day, $250 million a
year), that's still almost $700 a barrel. Granted, i can imagine some
efficiency gain with more experience and engineering insight, but it's still
not going to be solving the energy crisis for the near future. (not to say it
shouldn't be investigated). I'd be interested in seeing why they expect it to
cost so much, though.

Scott Edwards can turn biomass into hydrocarbons also. All he needs is a couple
beef buritos and some milk.
