I'm going to be playing some club rugby soon. I am in good walking around
shape, but not athletic shape. I have a lot of football training experience,
but not rugby. Are the workout principles similar for lifting? Are there any
things I need to focus on more than I would in a football workout?

I am 6-0, 220-225. In playing shape I'll probably be around 205-210 but could
get down to 190 if I was playing further outside.

yes my favorite topic.....

It's a bit different than football, though many of the dynamics are the same
running, tackling, explosion- most rugby skill are performed under a higher
degree of fatigue.

The position you play will matter- do you know what it will be?

Point is though (despite what foreigners say) American Football players can
become good rugby players, as many of the skills carry over.

I hate cardio, but it's necessary. Rugby is a lot of stop, run 20 meters, do
something athletic, run a few more meters.
You can go online and find rugby training guides, but normally they are
over-the-top All Black Level stuff.

For Club Level I used to mix my weights with cardio. I'm hopefully going to
play again in the fall, health permitting.

my training was-
I used to do a 1/2 mile at good pace on the treadmill. Go work one major
muscle group like Chest,Back,Quads,Hamstrings for 20-30 minutes (rugby for most
postions 10-12 reps) then do another 1/2 mile on the treadmill (work a minor
muscle group bicept, tricep, calves, shoulders) for 15-20 minutes than finish with
another 1/2 mile hard.

total-
About an hour workout, NEVER MORE THAN 1 MINUTE (preferably 30 seconds) between
sets. Trust me that may seem to short- but it works and you will build mass,
and rugby ready muscle.

----

If you know what position set your looking at let me know I have position
specific routines..
also who/where are you playing for? I know people at a lot of clubs.

My brother-in-law plays Rugby. Well, not so much these days but he used to play
in leagues- playing around the mid-south area (Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri,
Oklahoma, Tennessee). I always heard that he was pretty darn good. Anyway, he
and several Rugby buddies actually went down to Florida a couple of months ago
when Russell Crowe brought his team over. He said that he ran into Crowe
several times and that they stayed in the same hotel as his team.

Did you happen to go, AJ?

I played 7s rugby for 4 years in high school. Would have preferred to play
football, but we didn't have a team cause of insurance issues.

7s was a tonne of fun.

I didn't see Crowe- but they did some stuff with Fort Lauderdale which is my
current club.

We get a lot of touring sides come through here. The US team trains at our
faclilty occasionally, the Mexican National Team was in town a few weeks back
and there is always someone coming thru.

It makes you wonder why Florida is one of the worst rugby stayes in the US?

When I was 26 (11 years ago) I thought I had a shot at playing at a higher
level. I was running 3 miles in 18 minutes, 210 lbs benching 300, and could
count the missed tackles I made per season on one hand.
I was actually playing with Seattle in the Canadian Premier League (their
top level) and had played games in England, Wales and Trinity University in
Ireland.

Then I blew my ACL, it took about two years to recover. Afterword I couldn't
run like that ever again. I did some roids got huge, didn't really help with
rugby though LOL-

I'm probably a much better player now at 37 (I still "look" under 30) than I
was at 27, but after 2 ACL's I'll never have the same cardio condition I used
to. That and the body doesn't heal fast enough.- so it's club rugby for a few
more years, than I'll probably coach.

Thanks AJ.

I am not sure on the team now. The Reader's Digest is that I was offered a spot
a few years ago with a guy who was with a Texas team. I thought he said the
Huns. I don't know who he is with now. I assumed it was the same team, but I
don't see him with his old team anymore.

Just walk on to any club, every city has one. I have some connection on some
teams out of Dallas, and El Paso.

American Rugby Clubs have all levels and usually at least two sides (one
competitive and one less competitive)... there are guys on these teams who are
just there to have a few beers and make friends - and it's OK..

Most clubs are happy to have you whether your just there to have fun or your
planning on tearing it up.

The Summer is a good time to start it's more casual, 7's tourneys are laid
back...
just don't think 7's and 15's are the same. I love 15's, 7's are ok (too
much running in 7's for me)

I would have loved to play 15s, but the season conflicted with baseball.

Anyhow, 7s was fun. Lots of running and open field. I wasn't the biggest guy in
high school, but I got to play a big man position in my senior year. In 15s I'm
not sure that would have been as enjoyable.

you should see the Beach 7's tournaments they have in Florida...

some guys seem to run better - some worse. There are some bigger guys who
simply can't move and look like manatee's out there floundering around

My stride, whatever that is, seems to do OK in sand.

AJ,
After reading one of your posts, "The US team trains at our
faclilty occasionally," do you happen to know David Fee (winger)? I played with
him on a college select side and was curious to know if he is still living the
dream. Last i heard he plays on the Eagles 7's team.

I know who David Fee is and I remember him, but I'm sure he doesn't remember
me. I think played for OMBAC (San Diego's main club), which is about as close
to professional as it gets in the US and then he was on the Eagles for a
while..

I'd say Fee achieved the dream. I know he got to travel the world, play
against the best in the world, and was treated like a Pro Athlete in every
country he went too.

On the downside- Fee is over 30. Our best young US players nowdays are
commonly landing pro contracts overseas, he helped pave that way- but he'll
never see any of the $$$$ the younger US players have access to now.

follow up---

Fee did play some Eagle 15's in the early/mid 2000's though it appears he
didn't make the 2007 World Cup Team.

Still damn good way to spend your 20's.

Thank you very much and I certainly appreciate the update.

Fee is still on the U.S. team in my Playstation 2 rugby game, circa 2006
