I noticed this afternoon that Pheonix had aquired Sager from New Jersey, only a
couple days after I traded him to the Nets. That in itself is not an issue. But
then, I read Jeff's press release and learned that Sager signed for seven
years. This, after he refused to extend his contract with the Nets and with my
Bulls.

I'm wondering if anyone can explain why Sager would ink that contract, after
refusing to do the same with two other teams? It cant be chemistry, since all
three teams have "poor" chemistry.

Red, I really don't know why he re-signed with me. I thought it had to do with
chemistry, but I'm not sure (I believe there are sub-grades to chemistry that
we don't see... i.e. not all poors are the same).

Anyhow, it was a nice surprise for me when he was willing to re-sign. I knew
there was a chance that he would, but I thought the chances were pretty poor.

As a side note, in other leagues I've traded away players in the last year of
their contract. Normally, I try to work out a deal where I give an extra draft
pick if the player doesn't re-sign.

Sounds like another sim-generated "the rich get richer" thing to me. As in, top
players only want to sign with teams that have a chance of winning the
championship.

Players are often more likely to sign with a team that they are traded for,
which is really pretty similar to real life.

I think it is completely random. I don't think it has anything to do with rich
getting richer. I got Bolton in a trade and he refused to resign. I ended up
trading him to Atlanta and he resigned.

More randomness?

I cant speak for basketball since I have not really had great success there.
But in baseball that happened all the time to me. It has to do with I think,
that there is a factor that says resign with a championship caliber team. Just
ask Randy Moss. IT does happen.

In BEL none of my players resign with me after the age of 28. None, 0, nada.
It's like... you-a-sucka, me no play here.

So, yes the pro basket ball sim is just like that the rich get richer. At
least in baseball I can FA the player and get a draft pick. In basketball I
can FA the player and get to see him go somehwere else becasue my FA bid is so
low. I cant even raise my FA bid to compete. ALL I can do is rebid on an
equal footing with every one else. Basketball SHOULD have FA capability like
baseball. WHo cares if it's not that way in the NBA.

Thats fine, but it should be spelled out somewhere. Maybe a message that says
"So-and-so wont sign with you" when you check a trade. Its not like NBA general
managers make trades without talking to the players and making sure they are
agreeable and will at least discuss re-signing. This is like a crapshoot, same
as the draft.

Good sugestion Red. I like it.

Failing that change however I suggest you mitigate the risk in the deal. If the
player is willing to re-sign the other team might get a bonus pick or some sort
of option. That way everybody wins.

Jeff, you've mentioned that twice now, and I must be reading it wrong.

If a player wont re-sign with me, and I trade him-you are saying I should offer
the other GM something extra if the guy wont re-sign. That is how I am reading
it, and that makes no sense. What did I miss?

The other way around Red...if someone trades you a player in the final year of
his contract, and he doesn't resign with you after making the trade, you would
receive compensation from the team that traded him to you.

What Ryan said.

Actually I think Ryan and I made a deal like this in the IBA for a nice point
guard named Allen... did we not?

In any case, I know I've done it a few times. Personally I think it works out
nice cause it hedges your bets.
