It's always interesting when you go into a season knowing you will have
scholarship problems after the season. In the offseason, I will have 3
available scholarships (1 open, 2 seniors). The following four players do not
have scholarships currently.
C.Kruskall C Fr 2 6 6 3 2 1 3 9 100 6'11" 0.00 -- *- C B C
H.Hale PF Fr 5 7 3 3 4 1 3 9 100 6' 9" 0.00 -- *- B A C
N.Newby PF So 5 6 5 3 6 3 2 18 100 6' 7" 0.00 -- *- B A PF
J.Unites PG Fr 5 4 0 5 3 5 1 14 100 6' 7" 0.00 -- *- C C SF
As of right now, Kruskall and Hale are starters, and Newby is the 2nd string
PF. Unites will be the third PG. I can pretty much guarantee that the top
three will demand scholarships, and Unites might.
I know that I will want at least one scholarship for recruiting. So, I can
almost guarantee that I will lose one or two of these guys. The question will
be which ones to keep. They are all playing for their scholarships this
season.
I had thought about not playing Unites in hopes that he might not demand a
scholarship if he hadn't played, but decided to redshirt the two PG recruits
instead.
I should note that this is not a complaint. This is a nice problem to have.
Any chance Unites doesn't demand a scholarship if he averages 10 minutes or
less per game?

In my experience if you keep him down to less than 8 minutes a game he won't
demand a scholarship. As #3 guard he will most likely not demand a scholarship
unless he is B A or higher rated. I have never seen a #2 player at a position
NOT demand a scholarship.

Yea, Dave.
I am in a similar boat. I feel I am going to have 4 opening and 1 scholership.
My thoughts was this... I take the 2 best walk ons, no matter. Recruit 1
player in round 1 and try to go after a decent round 2 player without a
schollie. I also may try to play the 2nd stringers less in games I am sure I
can win easy. THat way maybe they wont demand one. But that only postpones it
a year and then I'll have to offer them next year. SO unless they are Juniors
or you got a ton of seniors, it wont help much anyway.

That was me this year...3 demands, all three worth keeping, with one
scholarship.
Thankfully, one of my recruits turned into a C A and my one kept walkon turned
into something, salvaging the year somewhat.
