As mentioned in my recent CBEL Weekly article I thought I would float the idea
of a Hall of Fame for coaches. I really have no concrete idea for organizing
it but thought some of you might. So...the best way may be to get thoughts on
the following...
1. Is this a good/popular idea?
2. What would the criteria be?
3. How would the process be organized? For example how would coaches be
nominated/voted in?
4. Could we have a web site maintained like the ones under Teams....Team Pages
(I think these are all old and no longer maintained)

1. Is this a good/popular idea?

I like the idea, it would be interesting to see how coaches view the other
coaches.

2. What would the criteria be?

I think the coach should have at least 500 wins, also at least a .500 career
record.

3. How would the process be organized? For example how would coaches be
nominated/voted in?

I think it should be similar to the baseball hall of fame where 75 percent of
the vote would be needed for the coach to be voted in. I think at the
beginning, there should be a max of five, no one knows who the other is voted
for until all the entries are sent in. I think like the baseball hall of fame,
its just with everyone's gut feeling.

4. Could we have a web site maintained like the ones under Teams....Team Pages
(I think these are all old and no longer maintained)

I don't have an answer for this one.

1. Is this a good/popular idea?

Fantastico!

2. What would the criteria be?

I like the 500 career wins/.500 winning percentage plateau.

3. How would the process be organized? For example how would coaches be
nominated/voted in?

I would think that a two-stage process of nominating and then final-vote would
be workable. If there is an initial criteria like 500/.500, then it is
straightforward to generate a list and circulate it with some time for
reflection. But how to handle the voting? Rank-order top-5? Vote for any
five, with 75% overall acceptance? Would coaches get credit for voting, as
they do for PRs?

4. Could we have a web site maintained like the ones under Teams....Team
Pages?

I would think someone here would be savvy enough to be able to put up a basic
webpage that these results could be displayed on?

Also, would these coaches already need to be retired, or could we have a
separate initial vote to induct retired coaches? The Thompson Twins come
immediately to mind for me.

1. Is this a good/popular idea?
Good idea for retired coaches. Bad for active ones.
I wouldn't like to see active coaches in the HoF for the simple reason I don't
want to see 2 groups of coaches, the ones that belong and the ones that don't.
Only retired coaches.

2. What would the criteria be?
Inactive coaches for at least a few seasons.
To be eligible besides retirement, a specific amount of wins based on each
sport and level. Oh this is a basketball thread but why not a HoF for each
sport and one for DEL in general?

3. How would the process be organized? For example how would coaches be
nominated/voted in?
If only college basketball HoF, then only active CBEL can vote (bonus needed
for seeking large participation). If both college and pro basketball, each
commish would organize a vote in their league.
I think someone should introduce these retired coaches to all coaches (PR or
league mail) because many active coaches wouldn't know old time great coaches.

4. Could we have a web site maintained like the ones under Teams....Team Pages
(I think these are all old and no longer maintained)
no opinion.

Last comment - My first and only vote for the first class would be for Jeff
Koss who was a great coach in many sports. I even suggest that the DEL HoF
would be named the Jeff Koss HoF, like the real one is the Naismith HoF.

I think it would be tough to not allow active coaches in because how often do
we seen coaches simply retire or leave the game. From what I can see without
doing a huge amount of research is that most of the all time great coaches are
still coaching so it would be tough to do.

I second naming the hall of fame after Jeff Koss. I still look at Florida St
and see it as one of the top teams even if it is not and still think of Jeff
still coaching them.

While I think it would be realistic to wait until coaches retire before
inducting them into the DEL HoFs, as an incentive/reward and/or a participatory
experience I think it is more important to allow coaches to be voted in while
they are still active in the league. Otherwise, unlike the RW, if they have
retired from DEL they will never even know that they have been voted into the
HoF.
