I have this guy in minors:
A.VanDyk P 20r 3 2 2 1 2 3 9 5 10 R R
Yes, he could be a top closer in the future, but is there any chance he could
be a starter? Should I try to start him in minors?

you can start a 0 DR pitcher and he can throw 9 shutout innings...
he just won't recover fast enough for a 5 day rotation.
A 3dr pitcher probably can't give you more tha 4-5 innings and stay on a 5 man
rotation.

I am stepping a bit into the way back machine here, but the original sim
assumed every pitcher could be an effective starter, but a zero Dr pitcher
would be more like Pedro Martinez. A change was put in that created true
relievers and I believe the cutoff is four Dr. Below that line the pitchers
fatigue faster and can face fewer batters than before the change.
The effect is that it is normally best to make your top sub-four dr guys your
top relievers and the 4+ dr guys potential starters. That said, some very good
coaches continue to start their four best pitchers regardless of Dr. It works
fine, but as said above they will have to leave the game fairly early.
Keep in mind, a 3 Dr pitcher that keeps the opponent OBP very low may get more
innings than a high Dr pitcher that can't get batters out consistently. So, in
the end, the decision is partly based on the relative talent.
I am going by memory here, and I hope that my numbers are correct.

I usually don't start guys who have less than 5 dr although, they can be used
in emergency situations as long as you arn't expecting them to be ready for the
next 5 or 6 games.
I'd let him pitch as a closer in the minors now.
The cool thing is, he has the potential to improve his dr and may become a
starter.

I had 0DR guy throw a 8 1/3rd inning no hitter three seasons ago.
and started a 2DR guy twice last season go 7+
I suppose they could have gotten lucky down the stretch when their stamina was
in the 50's..... but they still did it.

Good skills can overcome bad durability. You have to ask if you would rather
have a really good pitcher get 70 innings as a starter who gets pulled early or
40 innings as a good reliever.
My starters are 1, 4, 5, 6 and 1. The second 1 started out as the closer but
he could not close (3 blown saves in 5 attempts).
Their ERAs are 2.22, 2.48, 1.24, 4.42 and 5.42 (he was 12.00 something when he
became a starter).
I have always started Weatherall despite his low DR.
B.Weatherall P

MD 293 54 12 17 56 77 10 0 0 1.40 0.242
MD 270 58 24 23 55 63 8 2 0 3.43 0.300
MD 255 63 41 18 43 59 3 5 0 6.25 0.318
---- 818 175 77 58 154 199 21 7 0 3.48 0.285
B.Weatherall P Sr 1 4 0 2 2 2 8 8 20 L L 72 11 11 A A
But he does get pulled a lot in the 5th or 6th (he pitched yesterday hence the
72) and that is a problem when your bullpen sucks. His record is 5-1.

I started a guy last season with a 2 dr in CMEL, did very well.
Put him back in the pen this season and he has 9 wins.
I don't mind a low dr starter if you have a strong and deep bullpen, and
usually at least 2 other starters that can give you some major innings (8-10
dr) so you don't overwork the pen.

Rickman in EPBL started 24 games last year, had quality starts (at least 6
innings, 3 or fewer earned runs) in 15 of them, and didn't miss a start that I
can remember by being fatigued. Three seasons ago he had 189 innings as a
straight starter, despite missing some time with an injury. A classic example
that if you're a great pitcher you can get a lot of innings instead of being an
average pitcher and getting yanked half the time in the 4th or 5th.

Interestingly, I tried it with Srisouraj last year and he was horrible - not in
durability, but just not pitching well. He had a sub 2.00 ERA when I traded
for him, was over 3.00 in his time for me, mostly due to several bad starts in
a row.

Well if you set your fatigue 5 games or whatever he will never miss a start.
Thats what that setting does.
If you turn it off he definately will.
I don't like/use that setting so even my 7,8 DR guys miss starts sometimes when
they pitch complete games.

My point about not missing a start was that even with the 5-days setting in
place, he was still able to get through 6 innings and more more often than not.
He wasn't pitching 6 or 7 innings and then having to rest for a week.
I don't particularly like the setting, either, just because I never get
complete games even out of 10 Dr guys with it on, but since I don't have time
to micromanage every game, I have to use it to make sure I'm not shuffling the
rotation constantly.
